The new frontier for increasing asset ownership for low-income Americans through free tax preparation, financial education and access to mainstream financial institutions has not included people with disabilities and their families. NDI aligns itself with leading-edge organizations working on "out of poverty" issues for all low-income workers. Through training and technical assistance, both formal and informal, NDI strengthens non-disability specific corporations and organizations to integrate outreach and support to the disability community as an untapped market. To create an unprecedented opportunity to reach this market segment, National Disability Institute created a public-private partnership with community and government organizations as well as corporations and small businesses to bring the Real Economic Impact Tour to more than 100 cities nationwide. Last year, the Tour reached over 2.5 million people with disabilities and their families through special events and informational materials.
