Assistive Technology such as hearing aids, communication devices, wheelchairs, and home or vehicle modifications can be expensive to purchase. Luckily, there are several resources that can help you to obtain assistive
technology and services that will improve your quality of life. National Disability Institute can help you in your quest for assistive technology resources.
National Disability Institute’s Assistive Technology (AT) Loan Program provides affordable loans of $500 to $10,000 to residents of New York City, Brooklyn, Nassau, Staten Island, Suffolk, Queens and Westchester Counties. Assistive Technology loans from $500 to $30,000 are available for residents of New Jersey.
STEP ONE: Get Informed
Take some time to learn about the assistive technology resources available in your state before you apply for a loan. A loan is just ONE of many options. Use the guides below to find available assistive technology and ways to reduce your need for a loan.

AT Loan Program Fact Sheet
If you reside in the New York City area, BILS (Bronx Independent Living Services) is partnering with NDI to provide you greater access to this program through support in understanding available Assistive Technology resources, and group loan orientation classes.
STEP TWO: I think a loan is right for me. Now what?
It’s important to understand the loan application process and how having a loan will impact your spending, income and credit. We have created a Loan Orientation Course to help you.
Participation in the Orientation is required. The Orientation will:
- Help you complete a Spending Plan using your household income and expenses.
- Help you decide how much you can afford to borrow.
STEP THREE: I have completed the Orientation Course. I'm ready to apply!
Make sure that you read the Loan Application Checklist before you fill out the application (If you are requesting a loan for a vehicle modification, please print and have the Used Vehicle Inspection Checklist completed before you apply) . PLEASE NOTE: There is a $20 application fee payable with a credit card at the time of application.

STEP FOUR: What Happens After I Send My Application?
After you loan application is received, NDI will contact you for your intake. At that time, your loan application and credit report will be reviewed with you.
We will send a summary of your loan application to our NDI AT Loan Committee. The NDI AT Loan Committee will pre-screen you for an AT loan based on the requirements of the participating financial institutions. If you do not meet the requirements for a loan, we will ask that you reapply in the future.
If you pass the pre-screening for a loan, NDI will submit your loan application to the appropriate partnering financial institution. The financial institution will review your application and determine if your loan is approved or denied. Once your loan is approved, your loan funds will be issued directly to your AT vendor.
NDI encourages you to apply for a loan that meets your needs. If you need support along the way, please contact us.
