"EITC, you earned it. Now file, claim it , and get it!"
Join National Disability Institute and our partners as we kick-off National EITC Awareness Day and the start of free tax preparation services across the country! The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is one of the largest antipoverty programs set up by the federal government and for persons with disabilities, free tax preparation and EITC are gateways to building one’s economic self-sufficiency.
According to IRS, “Four out of five eligible workers claim and get their EITC”. The average EITC refund is $2,200!
Be a part of this virtual event to hear from NDI partners as they highlight their commitment to free tax preparation services and the importance of EITC for persons with disabilities.

December 18, 2012 - MyFreeTaxes: Workforce Empowerment Zones
Join representatives from the US Department of Labor (USDOL), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the MyFreeTaxes Partnership - National Disability Institute (NDI), United Way Worldwide (UWW) and Goodwill Industries International (GII) - on Tuesday, December 18 to learn how these national partners are working together to provide coordinated leadership and support to 10 workforce regions across the country that will serve as MyFreeTaxes pilots. Examples of collaboration and shared goals between MyFreeTaxes and the USDOL’s Disability Employment Initiative will be highlighted, as well as effective strategies for workforce centers offering on-site tax preparation. We will also hear from the IRS on how local SPEC representatives (Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication) can support the workforce pilots in their efforts to expand awareness and access to free tax preparation services. Finally, an overview will be provided on the Facilitated-Self Assistance program model, which the 10 workforce pilots will implement by hosting on-site VITA-certified Tax Coaches to assist taxpayers on www.MyFreeTaxes.com.

Real Economic Impact Tour: The Next Generation
Join National Disability Institute (NDI) on Dec. 5 for a national webinar about the new direction of NDI's Real Economic Impact Tour and an exciting announcement as we kick off the next generation of our tax and financial stability work designed to help the nearly 1 in 3 Americans with disabilities living in poverty take steps toward economic self-sufficiency. Since 2005, NDI's Real Economic Impact Tour in partnership with its network of more than 900 public and private organizations in 100 cities across the country has helped more than 1.5 million people with disabilities access more than $1.4billion in tax refunds.

September 25, 2012 - Federal Benefits and Electronic Payments: Go Direct & Bank On
Did you know that anyone receiving a paper check for a federal benefit will need to switch to an electronic payment method such as a bank account or the Direct Express Card by March 1, 2013?
Join us for a webinar on September 25 that will provide details on the Go Direct campaign. Go Direct was launched in 2005 as part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury's and the Federal Reserve Banks' effort to increase the use of electronic payments for federal benefits and to reduce the use of paper checks for federal benefit payments. With the help of organization partners, media and events, the campaign educates Americans by providing the tools and resources they need to enroll in, or transition to, electronic federal benefit payments. Anyone currently receiving a paper check for a federal benefit will need to switch to an electronic payment method by March 1, 2013.
This webinar will also highlight Bank On programs and how to connect with a Bank On program in your community. Bank On programs are locally-led coalitions of government agencies, financial institutions and community organizations to help improve the financial futures of unbanked and underbanked individuals and families.

Aug 16, 2012 - Prepare for VITA 2013 - Access and Accomodations
Join us to learn the nuts and bolts of ensuring your tax sites, materials and outreach meet the needs of taxpayers with disabilities. This webinar will provide key points for VITA site volunteers to know in serving taxpayers with disabilities. Presenters will review an accessibility checklist created for VITA sites as well as share tips about the physical components of making your tax sites accessible. Participants will learn about specific types of disabilities and disability etiquette including people-first language. This information will help to foster inclusion in your programs and services. The resources acquired in this workshop will provide the necessary tools to train and educate your volunteers and staff with regard to the disability community. This session will also provide information on how to establish partnerships with ADA Center Affiliates and other disability related organizations in your community.
