REI Tour Projects & Initiatives

Starting as a small pilot in 11 cities, the Real Economic Impact Tour (REI Tour) began in 2005 with the goal of building more disability-inclusive, free tax coalitions across the country. The Tour's successes over the years were thanks in large part to the innovative collaborations enjoyed with both government and state partners as well as independent organizations around the country.

DeafTax VITA Pilot

In 2008, National Disability Institute in partnership with the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication (SPEC), DeafTax.com and Schwarz Financial Services designed and implemented a DeafTax Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) pilot to increase equal access to free tax assistance for deaf taxpayers in five cities.

The pilot connected deaf taxpayers and deaf tax preparers through state-of-the-art videophones, allowing for deaf-to-deaf tax preparation using ASL to communicate. Deaf tax filers made appointments at their local participating host organizations and connected via secure videophone, scanner and computer to a tax preparer in a remote location. Learn more at the DeafTax VITA Pilot page.

Bank of America BEST Pilot

The BEST Project was implemented as a pilot project in Jacksonville, Florida in 2009. Designed to create a training environment where individuals learned from one another about financial education and asset building opportunities, the BEST Project utilizes the interactive and participatory learning model developed by Everyday Democracy with a customized curriculum based on the U.S. Treasury President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy Standards.

BEST introduced individuals to local experts and resources pertaining to the needs of the group; for example, individuals received information directly from the Internal Revenue Service on local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Sites and the Earned Income Tax Credit. VISA Financial Soccer

Photo of Financial Soccer Game HomepageFinancial Soccer is a fast-paced, multiple-choice question game, testing players knowledge of financial management skills as they advance down field, and try to score goals. In partnership with VISA, Inc., we added disability related questions to test your knowledge of the interplay of your finances and your public benefits. Answer the questions correctly and your players will continue moving the ball and scoring goals. Play individually by choosing your home team and your opponent or go head to head with other online players. With three levels (easy, intermediate and advanced), you can continue to play, test your ability and grow your knowledge.
